O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She was able to advance to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performance. O'Neil had received high praise from judges. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed within the bottom three as well as the in the bottom two. The judges were stunned by the results and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he never fell into the bottom 3. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie made it to the final two, the judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
